Tolkein Weekend at Spring Hill College

One of the towers that influenced JRR Tolkein

tolkein-society-logoIn 2005 The Moseleians Association joined The Tolkein Weekend by offering a guided walk from the mill to the top of Spring Hill Tower. Much has been written about JRR Tolkein and what influenced his writings. What we do know is that he lived just a stones throw from Spring Hill College and would have been very familiar with the building. We also know that his brother Hilary trained at the College during the first World War.

Spring Hill College is a Gothic style building with many mythical creature depicted in gargoyles on the face of the building. Perhaps these gargoyles also influence the young Tolkein.
